    What is Bimatoprost?

Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide analog used primarily in ophthalmology to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral routes. Bimatoprost is also utilized cosmetically under the brand name LATISSE® to promote eyelash growth by extending the growth phase of the hair cycle.

    • Class: Prostaglandin analog
    • Uses: Glaucoma, ocular hypertension, eyelash growth
    • Mechanism of Action: Increases aqueous humor outflow

    Bimatoprost Indication

Bimatoprost is primarily indicated for two main purposes: the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, and the treatment of hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. In its ophthalmic solution form, marketed as LUMIGAN®, Bimatoprost is used to lower IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, thereby reducing the risk of optic nerve damage and visual field loss.
For cosmetic use, Bimatoprost is marketed as LATISSE® and LUMIGAN®, where it is indicated to promote the growth of longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes in individuals with inadequate or sparse eyelashes (hypotrichosis). Both indications make Bimatoprost a versatile agent in ophthalmology and cosmetic dermatology.

    LUMIGAN® Indications

LUMIGAN® (Bimatoprost) is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is used when patients require a significant reduction in IOP to prevent further optic nerve damage and visual field loss.

    • Primary Use: Lowering intraocular pressure
    • Conditions Treated: Open-angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension
    • Patient Population: Adults

    LATISSE® Indications

LATISSE®, a formulation of Bimatoprost, is indicated for the treatment of hypotrichosis of the eyelashes, where it promotes longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes. This indication is cosmetic and targets patients desiring enhanced eyelash appearance.

    • Primary Use: Eyelash growth enhancement
    • Condition Treated: Hypotrichosis of the eyelashes
    • Patient Population: Adults

    Bimatoprost Side Effects

Bimatoprost, while effective for its intended uses, can cause a range of side effects. The most common side effects associated with its use, particularly in the form of LUMIGAN® for reducing intraocular pressure, include conjunctival hyperemia (eye redness), growth of eyelashes, and ocular pruritus (itching).
Bimatoprost can also lead to pigmentation changes in the iris and periocular skin, which may be permanent. Less commonly, patients may experience visual disturbances, eye pain, and increased risk of macular edema, particularly in those with predisposing factors. When used as LATISSE® for eyelash growth, side effects like eyelid skin darkening, eye redness, and itching are prevalent. There is also a risk of bacterial keratitis if the product becomes contaminated.

    LUMIGAN® Side Effects

The most common side effects of LUMIGAN® include conjunctival hyperemia (eye redness), growth of eyelashes, and ocular pruritus (itching). It can also cause pigmentation changes in the iris and periocular skin, which may be permanent. Other less common side effects include visual disturbances, eye pain, and increased risk of macular edema in susceptible patients.

    • Common Side Effects: Conjunctival hyperemia, eyelash growth, ocular pruritus
    • Serious Side Effects: Iris pigmentation, macular edema
    • Systemic Effects: Upper respiratory infections, headaches

    LATISSE® Side Effects

LATISSE® shares similar side effects with LUMIGAN®, particularly regarding ocular hyperemia and eyelid skin darkening. Patients may also experience increased pigmentation of the iris, which can be permanent. Other side effects include itching, eye irritation, and risk of bacterial keratitis if the product is contaminated.

    • Common Side Effects: Eyelid darkening, eye redness, itching
    • Serious Side Effects: Permanent iris pigmentation, bacterial keratitis
    • Systemic Effects: None commonly reported

    Bimatoprost Dosage and Administration Technique

Bimatoprost is administered differently depending on its indication, whether as LUMIGAN® for glaucoma and ocular hypertension or as LATISSE® for eyelash growth. For LUMIGAN®, the recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
It is important not to exceed this dosage, as more frequent administration can reduce the efficacy in lowering intraocular pressure. Patients using other ophthalmic drugs should administer them at least five minutes apart to prevent dilution or interference.

    LUMIGAN® Dosage and Administration Technique

For LUMIGAN®, the recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. It is crucial not to exceed this dosage, as more frequent administration can reduce the effectiveness in lowering intraocular pressure. LUMIGAN® can be used alongside other ophthalmic drugs, provided they are administered at least five minutes apart.

    • Dosage: One drop daily in the evening
    • Administration: Avoid contact with the dropper to prevent contamination
    • Combination Therapy: Administer other ophthalmic drugs at least 5 minutes apart

    LATISSE® Dosage and Administration Technique

LATISSE® should be applied once nightly to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes. A sterile applicator should be used for each application to avoid contamination. It should not be applied to the lower eyelid, and any excess solution should be blotted to avoid unintended hair growth in other areas.

    • Dosage: One application per night to the upper eyelid
    • Administration: Use a sterile applicator for each eye, avoid lower eyelid application
    • Precautions: Avoid contamination and blot excess solution
