PRP therapy is rapidly gaining popularity as a facial rejuvenation treatment. In essence, PRP kits are commercial kits that supply the healthcare practitioner intending to provide PRP therapy with all the necessary items for harvesting PRP. PRP Kits offer reliable yields while keeping the PRP extraction protocol simple and rapid for quick processing.
PRP Kits can be divided into two groups based on the method of extraction used:
PRP is a concentrate of platelets with associated cytokines and growth factors that is valued as a treatment that promotes the regeneration of aged or injured tissue. Its potential for accelerating wound healing has seen its use in a variety of medical fields such as trauma, sports medicine and dermatology. PRP is indicated for bone healing, soft tissue repair, and cosmetic rejuvenation, among others. For PRP to be considered therapeutic, that is, to have a clinical effect when administered, the platelet count contained in the generated PRP should be at one million platelets per µl of plasma.
PRP Kits are favoured over non-kit methods as the PRP obtained are usually of higher quality both in purity, as kits enable the complete separation of other blood components, and yield, as commercial kits typically produce PRP with higher platelet counts than conventional methods. The process by which PRP is generated using the commercial kit varies, but the protocol typically follows three stages:
PRP therapy is generally regarded as very safe due to the autologous nature of the material used for treatment. Side effects are minimal, any reactions that may occur are usually mild in severity and should resolve on their own within a few days. These common side effects include swelling, redness, and tenderness at the site of injection.
After PRP treatment, the patient should refrain from touching or manipulating the treatment area (e.g. massage) unnecessarily, and to abstain from activities that may increase the risk of bruising such as alcohol intake, taking certain herbal supplements (e.g., St. John’s Wart, Garlic, Red Yeast Extract), green tea, vitamin E, fish oil, ginseng, and anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin.
