Aging affects both the face and the hands. With constant exposure to the sun and the loss of nutrients in the body, the skin at the back of the hands become thinner and more wrinkled. One of the methods of reviving the smoothness of the hands is to use the dermal filler Radiesse.
Radiesse is a white, opaque, and sterile dermal filler that smooths creases and wrinkles on the face and increases the volume in the backs of the hands. It contains 30% synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) suspended in a 70% gel carrier consisting of glycerin, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and sterile water for injection. The CaHA microparticles are biodegradable within the body, as it shares similar properties to human bones. Through a minimally invasive procedure, this injectable can enhance an individual’s skin and help them regain their youthful radiance.
How does CaHA make the hands look younger?
CaHA microspheres act as a scaffold for neocollagenesis. Fibroblasts become activated by these particles and begin to stimulate the production of collagen, thus increasing the skin’s resilience and firmness. The collagenic growth may begin as early as four weeks after the injection, and it replaces the carboxymethylcellulose gel within two to three months. It has been recorded that the new collagen that forms around the deposited CaHA can last for an average of 12 to 18 months and, in certain scenarios, even up to two to three years.
The biocompatibility and similarity CAHA has to teeth and bones makes it easier for natural bio-degradation to occur. In time, the CaHA concentration will be broken down by the phagocytes into calcium and phosphate ions, leaving little CaHA debris after 12 months. Fortunately, the aesthetic results will still be present and visible regardless of the metabolism, which is the primary factor affecting the time it takes for the CaHa to break down.
Applying Radiesse on the Hands
The injector should be professionally trained in conducting dermal filler treatments. A successful injection usually takes less than an hour to complete, and it will require little to no downtime.
Before beginning the procedure, ask the patient to wash their hands with soap and water. Clean the hands with antiseptic treatment to avoid any potential infection. For Radiesse, a 25-gauge needle is recommended for the treatment.
The injection points should be located in between the 2nd and 4th metacarpals. For optimal correction, include points between the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th metacarpals, and avoid metacarpophalangeal joints. To be more accurate with the injection, perform skin tenting to separate the skin from any vulnerable structures underneath.
Advance the needle between the superficial fascia and the subcutaneous layer. Inject at least 0.20.5cc/bolus into the skin. For each hand, the maximum amount should be only 3cc without any overcorrection. After completing the injection, it can help to sit on the hands immediately following the injection. This helps to spread the solution evenly and can also reduce the appearance of swelling, according to recent studies.
The Final Result
Radiesse is an effective filler for restoring volume. The veins and tendons on the hands will become less visible, masking the effect of aging with smoother and firmer skin. If you would like to restore youth back to your hands, talk to your doctor about Radiesse treatments.
