Botulinum toxins were a breakthrough that changed both medical and aesthetic treatments.

They offer a targeted solution for various conditions, from muscle spasticity disorders to dynamic facial wrinkles. By temporarily paralyzing muscles, they reduce muscle movements and result in smoother skin.

The botulinum toxin market was valued at $11.5 billion in 2023. This valuation goes to show how essential they are for clinics that want to stay competitive and provide the best care for patients. Our team can guide you on how to buy botulinum toxins from reputable and trusted suppliers.

What Are Botulinum Toxins Used For?

As mentioned, botulinum toxins (BTX) are a valuable tool for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments.

In therapeutic contexts, they relieve conditions with involuntary muscle contractions, such as cervical dystonia, by relaxing the overly contracted muscles, alleviating pain, and improving the range of motion.

Botulinum toxins can significantly improve patient’s quality of life suffering from hyperhidrosis by inhibiting the excessive nerve signals that lead to overactive sweat glands.

They can also help patients suffering from chronic migraines by stopping the pain-signaling pathways. This leads to a reduction in the frequency and severity of migraine episodes.

Cosmetically, botulinum toxins shine in their ability to decrease dynamic wrinkles. Commonly treated areas include the forehead, glabella, and around the eyes, where repeated muscular contractions contribute to forming expression lines.

By temporarily paralyzing these muscles, botulinum toxins create a smoother and younger facial appearance.

Regular treatments address existing lines and play a preventative role by reducing the development of new wrinkles and maintaining the skin’s youthful texture over time.

How Long Do Botulinum Toxins Last?

The benefits of botulinum toxin injections typically last between 3 to 6 months. This varies by several factors, including the dose administered, the individual’s muscle mass and activity level, and the specific area treated.

For example, areas with stronger muscle activity, such as the glabella or crow’s feet, may metabolize the toxin more quickly, leading to a shorter duration of effect.

Botulinum Toxin Side Effects

Botulinum toxins are generally considered safe, and several studies performed on 2309 patients who were administered BTX reported no severe side effects.

However, as with any medication, some unwanted effects can happen. Let’s go through the most common:

Common Side Effects

When administering botulinum toxin treatments, the most frequently encountered side effects are localized reactions at the injection site.

These include discomfort, redness, swelling, and bruising. Such reactions are typically mild and resolve spontaneously within a few days.

Another side effect you may observe is temporary muscle weakness in the treated area. This is an expected outcome given the mechanism of botulinum toxin but underscores the need for accurate dosing and precise targeting of the intended muscle groups to avoid affecting surrounding muscles unnecessarily.

Less Common Side Effects

Less frequently, patients might experience eyelid ptosis due to the toxin affecting muscles beyond the intended treatment area.

Headaches or flu-like symptoms may also occur, although these are generally self-limiting and resolve without further treatment.

Serious adverse effects, like difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, are rare but require immediate attention as they may indicate that the toxin has spread to areas far from the injection site.

Allergic reactions to botulinum toxin are rare but require fast recognition and proper management.

Botulinum Toxin Administration Techniques

The techniques for injection can vary significantly based on the treatment goals and areas. Here are detailed techniques for two common uses: treating crow’s feet and resolving migraines.

Treating Crow’s Feet

  • Assessment: Evaluate the extent of the lateral canthal lines and the patient’s skin elasticity.
  • Anatomy & Dosing: Focus on the lateral orbicularis oculi muscle. Typically, 2-4 units of botulinum toxin per injection site are enough.
  • Injection Points: Three injection points are commonly used, each located outside the orbital rim to avoid affecting the muscles controlling eyelid movement. The injections should be spaced evenly along the lateral eye, where the crow’s feet are most prominent.
  • Technique: Use a fine needle (30-gauge) and inject superficially beneath the skin to minimize the risk of bruising. The injection angle should be parallel to the skin surface.

Resolving Migraines

  • Assessment: Identify the migraine pattern and frequency. Note specific trigger points if the patient is aware of them.
  • Anatomy & Dosing: Treatment areas typically include the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and shoulders. Doses can vary widely, with total treatment doses ranging from 155 to 195 units divided across all injection sites.
  • Injection Points: Key points include the corrugator and procerus muscles in the forehead, the temporalis muscle at the temples, the occipitalis at the back of the head, the cervical paraspinal muscle group in the neck, and the trapezius muscle in the shoulders.
  • Technique: Deep injections into the muscle are often required, especially for the neck and shoulders. A larger needle (27-gauge) may be necessary for these deeper, thicker muscles.

Different Brands of Botulinum Toxins

Botulinum toxin’s popularity led to a large increase in the number of laboratories creating their own version of the toxin.

Let’s go over some of the most popular and trusted brands of this product:

BOCOUTURE®

BOCOUTURE® created a BTX formulation without complexing proteins, minimizing the risk of an immune response. It’s ideal for patients who want a lower risk of resistance with similar benefits.

BOTOX®

BOTOX® is the most well-known brand, with a long-standing reputation for safety and efficacy. It was one of the first brands of BTX to emerge on the market, which made it a leader in the space.

DYSPORT®

DYSPORT® features a formulation that allows for a broader spread, which can be beneficial for larger areas like the forehead, offering a smoother, more natural-looking outcome.

INNOTOX®

INNOTOX® is unique as a ready-to-use liquid botulinum toxin, eliminating the need for reconstitution. This convenience and its stable and long-lasting results make it a good option for busy clinics.

LIZTOX®

LIZTOX® has a 99.8% purity rating, which far surpasses industry norms and establishes a new benchmark for quality. It delivers the same therapeutic effects as BOTOX® but at a more cost-effective price.
