Orencia® is a prescription medicine that reduces signs and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, in adults with modeate to servere conditions and Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Athritis in patients over 2 years old.
Orencia® is a protein-based medication that contains abatacept, which can be classified as selective co-stimulation modulator. The active ingredient is a glycosylated fusion protein that is made of two homologous polypeptide chains, with each chain containing 357 amino acids. Orencia® is supplied as a white to off-white powder for concentrate for solution for infusion. The powder is sterilized before being packaged in a 15ml vial made of type 1 glass and sealed via halobutyl rubber stopper and a flip-off aluminum seal. Each prefilled glass vial comes with a sterilized and disposable polyethylene syringe. Each vial must be reconstituted with 10ml of water for injection, after which the reconstituted solution must be diluted to 100ml using sodium chloride 9mg/ml (0.9%) solution for injection. The prepared solution can then be administered via an intravenous infusion.
Orencia® is indicated for adult patients who are diagnosed with moderate to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is also used alone or in combination with MTX for adult patients with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Orencia® can also be used to treat moderate to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in pediatric patients aged 6 years and older. The dose and dosage is determined based on patient’s body weight and the medical condition it is indicated for.
Orencia® helps to reduce inflammation by inhibiting the activation of autoimmune T-cell (lymphocyte). Hence, the symptoms of inflammatory and autoimmune medical conditions will then be alleviated.
